The newest 360-page color Tourist Trains Guidebook is chocked full of photos of tourist trains, including steam, diesel and electric, and a dozen colorful locator maps of railways and railway museums operating in the U.S. and Canada. The updated eighth edition of this 5 1/2" x 8 3/8” book features 520 excursion trains, dinner trains, trolley rides, railroad museums and historical depots. In addition, there are nearly 325 other unique rail-related attractions that are featured, but with more concise information. Each grouping is listed in alphabetical order, plus there is a helpful index at the rear of the book.

It would be difficult and time-consuming to individually process such detailed railroad museum information, thus this overview book is a great advantage for anyone wanting to visit railroad museums and attractions while on vacation, for instance. A typical listing includes information on excursions available, types of equipment used, general overview of museum displays, and special events. A “When to Go” paragraph explains visiting options and special promotions. Under the “Good to Know” section, you can learn interesting facts about the museum or its displays, or more exact ticket information or something about how the railroads in the area once operated.

Since many museums are close to other area attractions, the “Worth Doing” section of the listings offer more local information. Also, a brief mention is included on the best highway route to the museum or attraction. The phone, website, exact location and email address is also featured for each listing, and a handy index at the rear of the book lists all the museums, railroads and attractions. This is a particularly handy guidebook, especially since essential information on each museum operation changes so frequently.
