Although the narrow gauge system of the Denver & Rio Grande Western had shrunk to a third of the railroad’s total trackage in the 1920s, traffic was heavy and even growing in some parts of the line. In conjunction with its worn locomotives, the company turned to Baldwin Locomotive Works for 10 new Mikado outside frame engines which were designated class K-36. Considered the workhorses of the narrow gauge fleet, they were soon hauling freight system-wide.

Remarkably, nine of these locomotives still exist almost a century later. The fact that eight of them are currently in service on the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroads is a testament to their power and durability. With this substantial 224-page hardcover book filled with photos, maps, track folios, drawings and diagrams, you’re sure to understand for yourself why these locomotives are adored by both railfans and the crewmen who ran them. Also includes an appendix containing complete specs for the locomotives.
