Best of Industries Book Review

I don’t recall the last time I was so thoroughly impressed with the scope and detail contained in a model railroad publication. The 164-page special issue of Model Railroader's Best Of Industries certainly fills the bill and more. Whether you are just in the planning stages, partly finished or even completed a model railroad of any gauge, consider this softcover publication to offer good reading, excellent photography and building challenges for your layout.

While the 29 detailed and well-illustrated building projects originally appeared in Model Railroader magazine, it’s convenient to have them all in one publication. Each article is complemented with large color, or period black and white photographs, expertly drawn illustrations and plans, and some feature prototype backgrounder pieces to accompany the model articles. Example: in the “Kitbashing a Soybean Processing Plant” feature, a helpful backgrounder section is devoted to bean plant railroad traffic and associated car fleets of the 1940s and 1950s.

Other articles tell you how to model a bulk propane plant, offer information on meat packing plants and stockyard operations (with many prototype details), shipping California citrus, building a feed mill, a lime/cement plant, a freighthouse, an oil dealership, a transload terminal and a coal dealer, among others. Each article is thoroughly researched and documented.

Both large and small building projects are presented in this book and short “Get Started” boxes throughout add commentary and hints to the main articles. Some of the top hobby modelers/authors today have combined to make this publication a necessary part of your library.
