Displaying an innovative layout, P-39 was crafted by Lt. Benjamin S. Kelsey, fighter project officer in the Engineering Section, Material Command, Wright Field and Captain Gordon P. Saville, fighter tactics instructor for the Air Corps Tactical School.

The lack of a turbo-supercharger and limited room for on-board fuel tanks made this aircraft ill-suited to high-altitude combat resulting in this aircraft becoming the premier fighter of Soviet pilots. Soon after they served well for the British, Free French and the United States. This book highlights the aircraft’s service for the United States, exploring it’s use in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. See the development of the amazing aircraft through 170 photos, detailed line drawings and over a dozen color profiles.
